"Underway" Data

The R2R program defines “underway” data as digital data generated by sensor systems permanently installed on the vessel and routinely maintained by the operator, including:

System Type Description/Examples
ADCP Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler
CTD Conductivity, temperature, pressure and other sensors in the water column
Echosounder Single or multiple frequency acoustic depth to sea floor or midwater reflectors
Expendable Probe XBT, XCTD, XSV, and others
Fluorometer Fluorescence (usually for phytoplankton)
Gravimeter Gravity field
Magnetometer Magnetic field
Meteorology Station Meteorological data (e.g. winds, temperatures, humidity, turbulence, moisture)
Multibeam Hull-mounted swath seafloor mapping sonar data
Navigation Position and motion e.g. Global Positioning System (D/GPS, WAAS), Vertical Reference Unit (IMU/MRU), Speed log, Gyrocompass
pCO2 Partial pressure of dissolved carbon dioxide
SSV Sea surface sound velocimeter
Subbottom Acoustic shallow sediment penetration profiling data
TSG Thermosalinograph - flow-through temperature and salinity data
Winch Wire tension, speed, payout, etc.

We are currently assembling a table of existing underway instruments on UNOLS vessels.
