"Underway" Data
The R2R program defines “underway” data as digital data generated by sensor systems permanently installed on the vessel and routinely maintained by the operator, including:
| System Type | Description/Examples |
|---|---|
| ADCP | Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler |
| CTD | Conductivity, temperature, pressure and other sensors in the water column |
| Echosounder | Single or multiple frequency acoustic depth to sea floor or midwater reflectors |
| Expendable Probe | XBT, XCTD, XSV, and others |
| Fluorometer | Fluorescence (usually for phytoplankton) |
| Gravimeter | Gravity field |
| Magnetometer | Magnetic field |
| Meteorology Station | Meteorological data (e.g. winds, temperatures, humidity, turbulence, moisture) |
| Multibeam | Hull-mounted swath seafloor mapping sonar data |
| Navigation | Position and motion e.g. Global Positioning System (D/GPS, WAAS), Vertical Reference Unit (IMU/MRU), Speed log, Gyrocompass |
| pCO2 | Partial pressure of dissolved carbon dioxide |
| SSV | Sea surface sound velocimeter |
| Subbottom | Acoustic shallow sediment penetration profiling data |
| TSG | Thermosalinograph - flow-through temperature and salinity data |
| Winch | Wire tension, speed, payout, etc. |
We are currently assembling a table of existing underway instruments on UNOLS vessels.
