InstrumentDescription
ADCP (acoustic doppler current profiler) sonar measures water current velocities
Anemometer measures wind speed and direction
Barometer measures atmospheric pressure
CTD integrated hydro system measures conductivity, temp, pressure, etc.
Expendable Probe hand/deck-launched single-use depth probes - XBT, XCTD, XSV, XCP, etc.
Flowmeter measures rate of water flow - mechanical, optical, electromagnetic, etc.
Fluorometer measures fluorescence (usually for phytoplankton)
GNSS (global navigation satellite system) - GPS/WAAS, GLONASS, Galileo, etc.
Gravimeter measures the Earth's local gravitational field
Gyrocompass compass with a motorized gyroscope that tracks true north (heading)
HDSS (legacy data only) (hydrographic doppler sonar system) sonar measures water current velocities
Hygrometer measures moisture content in atmosphere, typically also includes air temperature
INS determines spatial position and motion using inertial sensors with input from additional sensors (eg. satellite fixes)
Magnetometer measures strength and/or direction of the Earth's local magnetic field
Met Station logger/translator/display hardware unit that integrates data from several meteorological sensors
Multibeam Sonar multiple formed beam echosounder (mapping sonar)
Nitrate Sensor measures nitrate in water
Oxygen Sensor (DO) measures amount of free oxygen dissolved in water
pCO2 measures partial pressure of dissolved carbon dioxide
pH measures acidic or basic value of seawater
PTU measures any/all of barometric pressure, air temperature, relative humidity
Radiometer measures radiation - pyranometer, pyrheliometer, pyrgeometer, etc.
Rain Gauge (udometer) measures amount of liquid precipitation
Singlebeam Sonar singlebeam ("profiling") echosounder used primarily to acquire bathymetry and/or subbottom data; may be fixed frequency or chirped
Speed Log measures Doppler near surface vessel speed through water
Splitbeam Sonar splitbeam ("fishfinding") echosounder used primarily to acquire water column imagery
SSV sound velocity profiler - typically installed in seachest for multibeam
Thermometer, Air measures temperature of air/atmosphere
Thermometer, Water measures temperature of water (oceanographic thermometer)
Time Server reads time from reference clock (GPS, WWVB, etc.) and distributes locally
Transmissometer measures fraction of light absorbed, or scattered, by particles in water
TSG (thermosalinograph) measures sea surface temperature, salinity, etc. near seawater intake
Ultra Short Baseline Positioning System Systems dedicated to the positioning of subsea vehicles such as ROV and AUV. They are based on acoustic transmitted signals between one or several transponders and one acoustic antenna installed on a surface vessel. The transponders are mounted on the underwater vehicle or are fixed on the seafloor. These underwater acoustic positioning systems are coupled with inertial navigation systems.
Wave Radar nautical X-Band radar measures wind waves and/or surface currents
winch (legacy data only) measures wire tension, speed, payout, etc.

Products

In addition to near-real-time quality assessment of MET/TSG data produced by SAMOS, and post-cruise quality assessment of selected data types, R2R creates and serves a set of standard products for each cruise:

Metadata

"Cruise-level" metadata record consisting of:

Expedition summary including:

  • cruise id
  • vessel
  • operator
  • project titles
  • funding awards
  • science party
  • ports
  • dates
  • survey targets
  • trackline geometry

Inventory of underway data sets including type, make, and model of each instrument system along with file format and release status.

Shiptrack Navigation

Quality-controlled shiptrack navigation as a suite of files:

Original resolution (typically 1sec GNSS/INS), 1-minute resolution, and abstracted (minimized) set of “control points".

Event Log

Scientific Sampling Event Log

The Event Log includes event numbers unique for the cruise, time, position, station and cast identifier as appropriate to the sampling event sampling instrument name (e.g. CTD, TM, MOC10), name of person responsible for the event, and a comment.

Post-processed Data

Post-processed data profiles for selected data types:

Geophysical trackline profiles (underway gravity, magnetics, bathymetry, etc) for vessels equipped with these instrument types; and Hydrographic profiles (depth, temperature, salinity, etc from CTD).
